The new law means an unconditional ban on cousin marriages, and foreign cousin marriages will, as a general rule, not be recognized in Sweden.

The aim is to counteract honor-related oppression, violence and other pressures.

It will also not be possible to enter into a marriage where one person is related in direct descent to the other's siblings, nor will it be possible for half-siblings and siblings by adoption to marry.

The law will enter into force on July 1, 2026.
