The Swedish qualifying limit in triple jump was 13.95 meters and Sjöstrand has jumped 14.01 at best this year. When World Athletics, the International Athletics Federation, established the ranking of the 36 best over the weekend, Sjöstrand ended up in 45th place.
It was fairly expected. She did not climb as much in the ranking after the Swedish Championship as we had hoped for. Everyone is aware that a nomination does not mean that you are selected. You can have met our criteria and be registered for the World Championship, but then you have to pick up enough points to get all the way in, says Kajsa Bergqvist at a press conference.
Several took a leap
Sjöstrand has two Swedish Championship silvers, most recently in Karlstad this summer. At the World Championship indoors in Ninjang at the end of March, she finished in 11th place.
The last weekend, many countries have national championships and these are competitions that give many points, which meant that several took a leap, says the national team captain.
Sweden is sending 35 athletes to the World Championship, which is the second largest team of all time. Only at the home World Championship in Gothenburg in 1995 were there more - 36 athletes.
This shows how strong Swedish athletics stands. At my first World Championship in this role in Eugene, there were 22, in Budapest 30 - and now 35, says Kajsa Bergqvist.
Duplantis gold favorite
Sweden's greatest gold hope is of course the pole vault star Armand Duplantis, but Bergqvist believes that the national team has several other medal chances. Including the reigning World Champion Daniel Ståhl.
If Daniel (Ståhl) is not there and fighting, I will be surprised. He exudes a great deal of self-confidence. But the level in the men's discus is brutal right now, says Bergqvist.
No specific medal target was communicated from the national team.
But it can be stated that several are given in the medal discussions. I think we have more potential top-eight placements than we have had in the last championships, says Bergqvist.
The World Championship will be held in Tokyo from 13 to 21 September.
