The nearly 290 gigabytes of data that hackers have copied from one of Svenska kraftnät's external servers is not business-critical information. And Sweden's power system has not been affected, according to the authority itself. The police are investigating gross data intrusion.

It was over the weekend that information emerged, and was later confirmed, that a hacker group had made a data breach at Svenska kraftnät. A server had been filled with 289 gigabytes, or rather the data had been copied by the perpetrators.

It is a server outside of Svenska kraftnät that is not connected to our critical systems, says Cem Göcgören, information security manager at the agency, to TT.

The information that the breach had occurred came from, among other things, an independent expert.

– It would have been nicer if we had discovered the breach ourselves, says Göcgören, but adds that what has happened is a reminder of the importance of constantly working with IT security.

He says that the early indications that no sensitive information has been leaked, or that nothing has been done that can affect the Swedish power grid, have been strengthened.

Cem Göcgören does not want to say anything about who the perpetrators are or if they have demanded anything in exchange. Such questions he refers to the police who are also investigating the breach. The server in question has been shut down.

Now we are focusing on the analysis, says Cem Göcgören who says he cannot give any examples of what type of information has been leaked, only that it does not involve personal data.

The police have initiated a preliminary investigation into gross data breach and write in a comment to TT that they are cooperating with Svenska kraftnät to secure evidence.
