A 24-year-old man is being sought to be detained in his absence for the murder of the Koran burner Salwan Momika, who was shot to death in January. ”At present, it is unknown where the suspect is located”, says prosecutor Rasmus Öman.

The man is on probable cause suspected of having shot Momika with several shots, according to the detention application.

"We have a good picture of the course of events and after extensive technical investigations and review of obtained surveillance footage, a person has been requested to be detained in absentia on probable cause suspected of murder," says senior prosecutor Rasmus Öman, who is leading the preliminary investigation, in a press release.

The prosecutor states that "the act has been preceded by careful planning and has involved severe suffering for the victim or otherwise been particularly ruthless".

The 24-year-old was arrested in his absence on June 19 and is also suspected of serious weapons offenses. He has previously been convicted of, among other things, minor narcotics offenses and gross negligence in traffic, but has not been convicted of any more serious crimes. He has also been suspected of attempted murder, but the investigation against him in that case was closed in 2021.

Live broadcast during the murder

Salwan Momika became internationally known for his Koran burnings - which sparked outrage in large parts of the Muslim world - and therefore had a very large threat against him.

Late in the evening of January 29 this year, he was shot to death in an apartment in Södertälje. At the time of the murder, he was holding a live broadcast on Tiktok. He went out onto the balcony to smoke and then shots were heard, according to witnesses who followed the broadcast.

Five men were arrested a few hours after the murder, but were later released and in March they were removed from the investigation.

Was prosecuted

The day after the murder, the Stockholm District Court was to have announced a verdict in a case where Momika was prosecuted for incitement to ethnic hatred. A man who participated in Momika's Koran burnings was convicted in February of the same crime.

According to Expressen's information, the suspected 24-year-old is believed to have fled to Iran after the deed. TT has sought prosecutor Rasmus Öman, who has declined to comment. TT has also sought the investigation leader Claes Murray, who refers to the prosecutor.

A detention hearing will be held on Friday.
