Three men who were swept far out to sea off the coast of Vietnam by Typhoon Kalmaegi have been rescued – after drifting free for over 40 hours.

The men were rescued after a search operation lasting several hours on Saturday involving three ships, one of those involved in the operation told the AFP news agency.

A miracle, says 40-year-old Phan Hau, who was involved in rescuing one of the men.

Most of the ten of us on board thought we were searching for a body, not that he was still breathing.

The three men were reported missing on Thursday afternoon after one of them jumped into the water during a family dispute, state media reported. The other two rowed out wearing life jackets to try to save him, but their small boat capsized and all three were pulled far out to sea.

Kalmaegi reached Vietnam on Thursday, causing at least five deaths in the country after a devastating rampage in the Philippines where over 200 people lost their lives.
