The federal courts in the USA will find it more difficult to stop President Trump's decree, which is intended to automatically block citizenship for children born in the country. This is the implication of a message from the country's supreme court.

The ruling is a major victory for Trump, who had promised in his election campaign to repeal the right to citizenship at birth for children of parents who are not legally resident in the USA. Several federal courts have blocked Trump's decree and claimed that it violates the constitution.

However, according to the Supreme Court, the courts have "probably exceeded their judicial powers, which Congress has given to the federal courts".

Trump says at a press conference at the White House that the decision is a "monumental victory for the constitution" and that it opens up the possibility of getting more political decisions through, which have been "incorrectly" blocked by the courts.

The decision in the Supreme Court was made with the vote count 6-3. The three judges who are considered liberal opposed the decision. One of them, Sonia Sotomayor, says in a statement that "the court's decision is nothing but an open invitation for the government to circumvent the constitution".

However, it has not been decided on the actual issue - whether Trump has the right to restrict the right to citizenship.
