No new NHL players other than those who were finalized last week were present when Sam Hallam presented the squad for his last World Cup - starting on Friday in Switzerland - before leaving his position as national team coach.
Stars like William Nylander of Toronto and Adrian Kempe of Los Angeles missed the NHL playoffs and are not in the World Cup squad.
Discussions are ongoing, but if you're not in the squad now and didn't make the playoffs, it's unlikely you'll be in later, Hallam said.
Five juniors remain
It will be a World Cup team with many young players. Of the six World Cup gold heroes who played the two general practice tournaments before the World Cup, five remain.
Viggo Björck, Anton Frondell, Ivar Stenberg, Jack Berglund and Love Härenstam are all selected.
However, defender Sascha Boumedienne was dropped.
"It's really cool to see these players. We've seen in recent years that the young players who have been there, for example Leo Carlsson, have stepped up even further in the World Cup and become leading players," Hallam said.
Compared to the squad that played the Beijer Hockey Games in Ängelholm last week, experienced defenseman Mattias Ekholm, Edmonton, and forward Oskar Sundqvist, St. Louis, will join the squad.
Eleven from the NHL
A total of eleven NHL players are on the squad - but there could be more. If so, they would come from teams eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs.
A total of 25 players are in the squad, but a possible plan is to register 20 players - two goalkeepers, six defenders and twelve forwards - for the opening match against Canada on Friday.
It could be that someone comes in. Whether it's one or three or no players - we don't know, Hallam said at the presentation of the squad.
Thirteen of the players are World Cup debutants, and Hallam believes he has a team that can compete with the other top nations.
I am very happy with the squad and the different leading qualities we have. I think our squad is doing well and that we have the ability to beat these other teams in a match.
