On the shortest day of the year, a hitherto rare guest this winter can appear over almost all of Sweden – the sun.

The explanation for the sun peeking out on the same day as the winter solstice – that is, the day when the day is shortest and the hours of darkness are the most, before it turns and becomes brighter – is a high-pressure ridge that is brought in over Scandinavia.

The cloud cover may have a little extra difficulty lifting in western Götaland, and there it may be later in the day before rays of sunshine appear. Clouds may also linger in the mountainous regions and in the northernmost parts there may be showers of snow during the day; SMHI's meteorologist wrote on Sunday morning.

The high pressure is expected to bring one or more days of colder weather, according to SMHI. The weather will continue to be dry, and there will likely be no white Christmas where snow has not already fallen.
