Just when Khartoum's airport was to open again after over two years, drones struck in the nearby area, according to witnesses in the Sudanese capital.

The attack was carried out early on Tuesday near Khartoum's international airport. A day before the Sudanese authorities planned to reopen the facility, only for domestic flights, for the first time in over two years.

Witnesses report that they heard the sound of drones over central and southern Khartum, as well as several explosions in the airport area between 04.00 and 06.00 local time.

The airport has been closed since fighting broke out in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), violence that has left parts of the capital's infrastructure with significant damage.

Last week, drones attacked two army bases in northwestern Khartum, but a military source stated that most were shot down. Most of the violence is now concentrated in the west, where the RSF has been trying to capture El-Fasher, a strategically important frontline city in Darfur, for over 18 months. If the city falls, the RSF would control all of Darfur and large parts of southern Sudan.

The civil war between the RSF and the Sudanese army has resulted in at least 40,000 people losing their lives according to officially confirmed estimates from the WHO, but the actual number of dead is feared to be clearly higher.
