The true death toll in the first 16 months of the Gaza war is significantly higher than local authorities had previously reported, according to a study.

More than 75,000 people were killed during the period, according to a new study published in the journal Lancet, The Guardian reports. That is 25,000 more than the Hamas-controlled Palestinian Authority reported for the same period.

According to the study, a total of 42,200 women, children and the elderly died between October 7, 2023, when Hamas carried out its attack that led to the war, and January 5, 2025.

"The accumulated evidence suggests that by January 5, 2025, 3-4 percent of Gaza's population had died a violent death," the study's authors write, adding that a large number of deaths occurred indirectly as a result of the conflict.

Exactly how many people were killed in the Gaza War has long been a contentious issue.
