43,600 upper secondary school students had their study grants withdrawn during the recently concluded academic year, the Central Student Financial Aid Board (CSN) announced. This is 11.8 percent of all upper secondary school students in Sweden.

The proportion has grown since the rules were tightened 14 years ago. During the 2024/2025 academic year, it was 10.8 percent.

A student who is absent for at least four school hours during a month without a valid reason may be reported to CSN, which may decide to withdraw the grant. Initially, a student receives SEK 1,250 per month.

A student who loses the grant may have to pay it back. This may also have consequences for other grants in the household.
