The study includes 214 patients who suffered their first acute myocardial infarction between the years 2000–2022. What stands out in the results is the low age of onset for a first acute myocardial infarction.

It is important to emphasize that patients do not have a worse chance of surviving their heart attack. It is the timing of the illness that stands out," says Joanna Hlebowicz, adjunct professor of cardiology at Lund University and assistant chief physician at the cardiac clinic at Skåne University Hospital.

The background to the study is the improvements that have occurred in Swedish cardiac care. In Sweden, around 1,000 children are born with heart defects each year, and today approximately 97 percent survive to adulthood.
