Student union: Give recent graduates the right to unemployment benefits

It has become more difficult for recent university graduates to find a job. Therefore, all recent graduates should be entitled to unemployment insurance under special conditions, suggests the Saco student council.

Recent graduates who become unemployed do not have a general right to unemployment benefits. The income requirement for unemployment benefits excludes the majority.

At the same time, the job market has become tougher. Last year, one in four students was without a full-time job four months after graduating, according to a report from the student union Saco Student Council.

The student union therefore wants to see special unemployment insurance rules for recent graduates. According to the proposal, recent graduates must have been a student member of an unemployment insurance fund - preferably free of charge - for twelve months in order to qualify. They should have the right to limit their job search to jobs that correspond to their education.

Saco Student Council's proposal:

A degree requirement gives the new graduate the right to limit their job search to jobs that correspond to their education.

The person must be registered with the Swedish Public Employment Service, have a recent university degree, have studied full-time and have been a student member of an unemployment fund for at least one year.

Compensation should correspond to the study allowance.

Compensation period: 100 days after completion of the waiting period.
