Members of the Unite Here Local 11 union voted last week to go on strike ahead of the World Cup. The approximately 2,000 members serve food and drinks at the stadium, where the United States plays its opening match against Paraguay on Saturday night.
After negotiations, the parties have now agreed on a contract until 2028, with what the union describes as historic wage increases. The workers are also demanding that the immigration police force, ICE, stay away during the World Cup and have reserved the right to go on strike.
"If federal immigration authorities threaten the safety of workers, our members have the right to leave their jobs. It is now written into their contracts," says co-chair Kurt Petersen in a press release.
