Strangulation, which according to the police and the Swedish Board of Forensic Medicine is one of the greatest risks for fatal violence in close relationships, occurs in every third rape conviction.
This is shown by DN's survey, which reviewed over 300 rape convictions from all district courts for the year 2025.
Just over a quarter of the convicted men were under 25 years old in cases where strangulation occurred.
Anna Jinghede Sundwall, a forensic scientist in Region Bergslagen, is leading a study investigating rape cases between 2023 and 2025, where she has seen that strangulation occurs in a significant proportion of cases. This primarily concerns young women who are victimised by relatives.
