The guitar, a Gibson Les Paul Standard from 1959, was owned at the time of the burglary by the former Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor, who had bought it from Keith Richards in 1967. The guitar was used, among other things, by Keith Richards during the band's first performance on the TV show "The Ed Sullivan Show" in 1964.

It was later stolen during a burglary on the French Riviera and then disappeared without a trace, writes Billboard.

But in May this year, the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that they had received a donation of more than 500 guitars made between 1920 and 1970.

One of them is said to be Mick Taylor's missing guitar.

An unnamed source says that Taylor is "baffled as to how his property ended up in the collection" and also said that Taylor "had never received compensation for the theft".
