After the Foreign Minister's visit to Eritrea, she believes the conditions for continued talks have improved. The assessment is that Dawit Isaak is still alive.

It was a good visit that provided an opportunity for frank discussions about regional issues, global challenges and our bilateral relations, says Maria Malmer Stenergard (M) at a press conference.

In the country, Dawit Isaak has been imprisoned for more than 24 years.

"We believe that we now have better conditions for continued talks on important issues, including the issue of Dawit Isaak," says the Foreign Minister.

Her visit was the first by a Swedish minister since Sweden recognized Eritrea as a state in 1993. During the visit, Malmer Stenergard met the country's Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Social Welfare, and the Minister of Information.

During the visit, I have clearly stated how important it is that Dawit Isaak be released and reunited with his family.

She is asked if knowledge of Dawit Isaak's situation has improved. She does not go into why, but the assessment is that he is alive.

We have not received any new information that changes our assessment that he is alive, says the Foreign Minister.

We have not received any concrete evidence of life.

No agreements have been made with Eritrea regarding Isaak, and no new meetings are planned.

During the press conference, she also comments on the case of a Swedish citizen who is imprisoned in Iran, accused of espionage.

We have received information, which has not yet been confirmed, that he has been sentenced to death in the first instance and with that we have summoned Iran's ambassador on Wednesday and clearly condemned it, says Malmer Stenergard.
