The Peruvian president José Jerí introduced on Tuesday local time a state of emergency in the capital Lima.

In a 50-second speech to the nation, Jerí declared a state of emergency for the capital and nearby Callao, reports La República. The state of emergency applies from midnight on Tuesday night and extends 30 days forward.

The announcement came after a 32-year-old demonstrator was shot dead by police and over 100 people were injured when protests near the congress in Lima culminated in violence. Among the injured were more than 80 police officers and around 30 civilians.

The South American country has been shaken for weeks by youth-led so-called Gen Z protests. The demonstrators are protesting against corruption and organized crime.

Thousands of young Peruvians have taken to the streets in Lima and several other cities to express their dissatisfaction with the authorities' inability to address the criminal violence.
