Last year, then-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated that the country would increase British defense spending from 2.3 percent of GDP to 2.5 percent, and that the increase would take place in stages until 2030.
Now, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announces that the goal is to be reached already by 2027, reports BBC. He specifically mentions Russia as a threat.
Russia is a threat in our waters, in our airspace, and on our streets, he says.
The investments in defense will be financed by reducing the country's development aid.
On Tuesday, Starmer is traveling to the USA to meet President Donald Trump in Washington DC. Trump has repeatedly urged European leaders to allocate 5 percent of their defense budgets.
