The Land and Environmental Court in Umeå has given the green light for steel manufacturer SSAB's construction of an electric steel plant, the company announces.
The plan is to phase out the blast furnace-based production system in Luleå.
"The permit enables a technological shift that entails significant positive environmental and climate effects, meets the high demand for our unique steel, and strengthens our future competitiveness", SSAB writes in a press release.
The new steel plant in Luleå is expected to be operational by the end of 2028. The investment is estimated to cost around 52 billion kronor.
