Diplomat Tobias Thyberg was appointed by the government as Sweden's new national security adviser on Thursday. Only hours later, he announced his resignation, citing "old pictures" from a dating app.
According to several media outlets, the intimate pictures were sent to the Government Offices by an anonymous sender just half an hour after Thyberg was presented.
Suspicions of Espionage
On Sunday, a person was arrested and detained on suspicion of espionage, the lower degree of suspicion. SVT reported on Monday, citing a "source with insight", that it concerns another Swedish diplomat.
Sweden's Radio has information that the Security Service (Säpo) has conducted a raid at the home of a diplomat as part of the investigation. Säpo has declined to comment, citing secrecy.
According to SVT's information, there is a connection between the circumstances surrounding the intimate pictures sent to the Government Offices and the espionage investigation. It is further stated that Säpo is investigating a possible connection.
Reported to the Police
The espionage suspect, who denies any wrongdoing, has reported the police to the authorities following the operation in which he was apprehended, according to the man's lawyer, Anton Strand, in Aftonbladet.
A police report has been filed today regarding misconduct and assault.
The door to the apartment and the front door have been smashed, Strand tells SVT.
Espionage involves a person secretly gathering information that can harm the security of the targeted nation and then passing on the information to a foreign power.
Tobias Thyberg is not suspected of any crime.
