Sparkling Middle Period, Skellefteå's Winning Recipe

A dazzling middle period and a brilliant goalkeeper. That was the recipe for victory when Skellefteå defeated Frölunda with 5–1 in the SHL ice hockey.

The three-pointer was the fifth in a row for the Västerbotten team after a deep form crisis beforehand.

So, of course, it's incredibly nice. The explanation for our turnaround is patience. We know we have a strong squad, says Skellefteå's two-goal shooter Rickard Hugg.

He has got the point production going with a vengeance. Four goals in the last two matches and ten points in the last five says a lot.

Hugg also sends extra praise to the team's goalkeeper. Gustav Lindvall hadn't played since the beginning of October. Now he came in and almost shut the door.

It's incredibly fun to see "Gurra" come in and play like that.

Goal fireworks in the second

It was anything but a dull mid-week match: emotions, a raging tempo, and intense from the first face-off.

Skellefteå took the lead when Anton Heikkinen scored his tenth goal of the season in the first period.

The start of the middle period offered a goal fireworks display. In just a few minutes, Skellefteå scored four more goals, went up 5-0, and decided the match.

A visibly irritated Frölunda coach Roger Rönnberg came to the press conference after the match.

A reckless tackle by Skellefteå's Pär Lindholm in the beginning put Frölunda's Arttu Ruotsalainen out of play but only resulted in a two-minute penalty. Frölunda was further decimated towards the end when Skellefteå's Michael Brandsegg-Nygård received a match penalty for a cross-checking on Filip Hasa.

It's sad and bloody disrespectful, says Rönnberg, who expects the situations to be reviewed afterwards.

He was also upset that Skellefteå took a timeout in a numerical superiority and a 5-0 lead just before the second period break.

It totally lacks class when you take a timeout with a 5-0 lead. You seem to lack "Robban" (Robert Ohlsson, Skellefteå's fired coach). It fired us up and we'll take it with us to the next match, says Roger Rönnberg.

Incomprehensible

Skellefteå coach Pierre Johnsson is incomprehensible as to why the timeout was seen as a provocation of an inferior opponent:

It had absolutely nothing to do with wanting to humiliate anyone. We were very out of sync in our power play and wanted to gather them, says Johnsson.

Gustav Lindvall in the home goal made almost a flawless performance. When only 19 seconds remained of the five-minute penalty on Brandsegg-Nygård in the middle of the third period, Linus Weissbach could score the consolation goal to 1-5.
