It is unclear what the Spanish countermeasures will consist of.

Italy has suspended Schengen cooperation with Spain for a month and introduced stricter border controls against the country after an estimated 50,000 migrants made their way from Morocco to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

The Spanish government calls the measure “unfair, contrary to the interests of the EU and discriminatory against the Spanish population,” and demands that it be withdrawn by August 9.

“Italy does not accept ultimatums or impositions from abroad regarding national security and border control,” the office of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said in response.
