A mysteriously downed drone in North Korea has become a scandal in South Korea, its arch-enemy. The government in Seoul initially denied any involvement, but has now raided spy centers and other locations.

A total of 18 locations were searched on Tuesday, including premises belonging to both the country's major intelligence service and its military spy service, abbreviated in English as the NIS and DIA, respectively.

The purpose of the drone is unclear, but the North Korean regime shot it down in January. South Korean President Lee Jae-Myung said at the time that South Korea was not involved, and that such an operation would be like “opening fire on the North,” that is a military attack.

Three civilians were arrested and charged in the incident. But now South Korea is investigating state involvement after all. Three military personnel and an intelligence officer are now suspects.
