The Trump administration has reportedly notified several European governments that the United States will phase out approximately 200 positions in NATO units that, among other things, monitor and plan the alliance's intelligence operations, Reuters reports.
However, not all affected personnel are expected to be withdrawn at the same time. Instead, the Pentagon plans not to replace people when their terms of service expire - meaning the cuts would last for several years, according to two sources cited by the Washington Post.
The reduction plans primarily concern units in the UK and Belgium.
The United States has previously demanded that Europe take over the bulk of NATO's conventional defense capabilities by 2027.
