Zelensky arrived in Canada on Saturday ahead of his meeting with Trump the following day. He was welcomed by Prime Minister Mark Carney, who said there was "a possibility for a just and lasting peace" in Ukraine, but that "it requires a willing Russia," the BBC reports.
The Prime Minister also announced that Canada is supporting Ukraine with 2.5 billion Canadian dollars, equivalent to almost 17 billion SEK, to initiate financing for Ukraine's reconstruction.
Zelensky and Carney then participated in a virtual meeting with leaders from Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Poland, Italy and the EU, among others. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also participated remotely during the meeting.
Great successes?
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Council President António Costa promised Ukraine continued EU support after the meeting.
“We welcome all efforts that lead to our common goals - a just and lasting peace that upholds Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” von der Leyen said at X.
The discussions with European and EU leaders were held the day before Zelensky and Trump are scheduled to meet in person in Palm Beach, Florida.
The meeting is a sign that major progress has been made in the negotiations, writes the news site Axios. This is in reference to Trump's previous statement that he will only enter into a meeting with Zelensky if he feels that a "deal" is close.
20-point plan
The latest round of negotiations between the United States and Ukraine has resulted in a 20-point plan to end Russia's offensive war. The draft has been sent to Moscow. In addition to the overall plan, separate documents on security guarantees are on the table, according to news agencies.
Whether Ukraine can agree to territorial concessions has been a key issue in the talks. Among the more sensitive topics to be discussed, according to Zelensky, are the Donbass region and the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant.
The Ukrainian president told Axios on Friday that he might consider holding a referendum on the peace plan - if Russia agrees to a 60-day ceasefire.
