A man suspected of placing pipe bombs in the US capital shortly before the storming of the Capitol building in 2021 has been arrested, US Attorney General Pam Bondi confirms.

The FBI made the arrest nearly five years after pipe bombs were placed near the Democratic and Republican headquarters in Washington, DC.

Information about the arrest came on Thursday afternoon and was confirmed a few hours later by the Minister of Justice.

"Let me be clear: no new tips have come in and no new witnesses have come forward. This is about diligent work by police and prosecutors," Pam Bondi said Thursday night.

No one was injured before the bombs were disposed of, but they could have potentially been fatal, according to the FBI.

The deployment took place on the evening of January 5, 2021, the day before members of Congress met at the Capitol to count the presidential electoral votes and formally declare Joe Biden the winner. It coincided with Donald Trump holding a political rally where he repeated false claims of widespread election fraud and urged his supporters to go to Congress.

Parts of the crowd did as he said. The protests turned deadly as hundreds of people stormed the Capitol, clashed with police, vandalized, and entered one of the chambers.

The investigation into the pipe bombs has long eluded the police, who have, among other things, tried to find out whether there is a connection between the explosives and the storming.

The suspect was reportedly arrested on Thursday morning.
