The arrest comes nearly five years after pipe bombs were placed near the Democratic and Republican headquarters in Washington, D.C. No one was injured before the bombs were defused, but they could have been potentially deadly, according to the FBI.
The deployment took place on the evening of January 5, 2021, the day before members of Congress met at the Capitol to count the presidential electoral votes and formally declare Joe Biden the winner. It coincided with Donald Trump holding a political rally where he repeated false claims of widespread election fraud and urged his supporters to go to Congress.
Parts of the crowd did as he said. The protests turned deadly as hundreds of people stormed the Capitol, clashed with police, vandalized, and entered one of the chambers.
The investigation into the pipe bombs has long eluded the police, who have, among other things, tried to find out whether there is a connection between the explosives and the storming.
The suspect was reportedly arrested on Thursday morning.
