In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 index was down 0.7 percent and the broader Topix index stood at minus 0.1 percent. The Japanese central bank presented a fairly expected interest rate decision, meaning it did nothing at all.
In China, there were roughly equally large declines for the composite indexes in Shanghai and Shenzhen, minus 0.7 and 0.6 percent respectively after a few hours of trading. In Hong Kong, the decline for the Hang Seng index was 1 percent.
In South Korea, it was the worst, minus 1.7 percent for the Kospi index.
