Eleven civilian Alawites have been killed by security forces in the Homs province in Syria over the past 24 hours, according to the British-based Syrian Human Rights Observatory, SOHR.
Several of them are believed to be university students, according to SOHR.
In early March, over 1,300 civilians, most of them belonging to the Shia Muslim minority Alawites, were killed in just a few days along Syria's Mediterranean coast, according to SOHR. According to eyewitnesses and survivors, entire families were killed.
The killing occurred when government forces took action after forces loyal to the ousted President Bashar al-Assad staged an uprising. The Assad family, who ruled Syria with an iron fist for 50 years, are also Alawites.
