S is positive about several of the proposed increased penalties, and especially double penalties for gang criminals, which will be introduced as early as August 1.

At the same time, other parts of the reform are being called a "castle in the air", because the Tidö parties did not set a date for when they will come into effect.

"Most of them will not become a reality until 10-15 years from now because there is a lack of funding and prison places," says Teresa Carvalho, legal policy spokesperson for S.

She also wants stricter maximum sentences for the most serious economic crimes and child pornography.

The Center Party agrees that legal policy measures against gang criminals must be tightened.

"But we also need to analyze the consequences of other serious crimes, such as violence against women and children, which in practice receive half as long sentences as if they had been committed by gang criminals," says legal policy spokesperson Ulrika Liljeberg (C) in a comment.

The Green Party emphasizes that several of the increased penalties have received harsh criticism from the Legislative Council, which did not think the proposal should become law.

"It is astonishing that the government is moving forward with a proposal that would put Sweden's prison population per capita on par with Russia and Turkey," says Ulrika Westerlund (MP).

She also believes Sweden is losing pace in preventive work when a lot of money is spent on increasing penalties.
