The much-anticipated opening of the Gaza-Egypt border crossing turned out to be a trickle. Only five patients were released on the first day.

Tens of thousands of injured and seriously ill people are waiting in the Gaza Strip to be allowed to travel abroad for treatment. The Rafah border crossing was opened on Monday.

But security checks are rigorous and will be carried out by the EU's border monitoring mission EUBAM, Israel and Egypt. According to media reports, it has been agreed that a maximum of 50 patients will be released per day, with up to two relatives per person travelling with them.

However, on the first day, only "five injured and seven support personnel" were allowed to leave, a source told the AFP news agency.

The same number, twelve people, were allowed into the Gaza Strip from Egypt, AP reports.
