SMHI warns of heavy snow showers of up to 15 centimeters that could cause traffic problems in eastern Kalmar County and northern Öland. The yellow warning for Kalmar County is in effect until 6 p.m. on Sunday, while the storm is not expected to improve until Monday morning in northern Öland.
Now SMHI is also issuing a warning for Monday for Blekinge, northeastern Skåne, southern Öland and parts of Småland, Halland and Västergötland. Snow is expected to start on Monday night and continue until the afternoon. A total of up to 15 centimeters of snow is expected.
40 minus in the mountains
This weekend's snow has mainly fallen in central and southern Sweden. In Oskarshamn, for example, a whopping 51 centimeters has been measured.
"That's pretty much in line with what we thought. We expected large amounts in eastern Svealand yesterday (Saturday) and that's what happened, and the same thing with parts of eastern Götaland," says Toni Fuentes, meteorologist at SMHI.
Right now, temperatures are below freezing in almost all of Sweden. Only two measuring stations - one on Öland and one on Gotland - have reported temperatures above freezing. In Gielas in the Lapland mountains, temperatures were recorded at -40 degrees Celsius overnight, which is a record low for this winter.
It is quite cold in large parts of northern Norrland, with temperatures of 30 - 35 degrees below zero or colder.
Still without power
Around 5,500 customers were without electricity on Sunday morning, according to Svenska kraftnät, most of them in the Gävle area and parts of Dalarna. The network companies are "working intensively to manage the consequences of the storm and restore the electricity supply," Svenska kraftnät writes on its website.
In Gävleborg County, just over 1,800 customers of the electricity company Ellevio were without electricity on Sunday afternoon.
“Surprisingly quiet”
The situation on the country's roads has, however, generally been "fairly pleasant" despite the snowstorm, says the Swedish Transport Administration's press communicator Beisi Sundin. A number of derailments have been reported, but no serious accidents.
"It has been surprisingly good considering the weather situation we have had. Road users have taken it easy, driven slowly and kept their distance, and we are grateful for that," she says.
Train traffic north from Gävle, which was canceled during the heavy snowstorm, will resume as planned from 10 a.m. on Monday.
