Peter Birro says the idea for the script came from his thoughts about Ingmar Bergman's freezer.
He said that his demons were there. And you can't let them out, because they are dangerous. Then I wondered, "What happens if they are let out?"
Bergman sometimes referred to himself as a cannibal. What happens when one's pursuit of art becomes more important than compassion, when compassion is eaten?
Gustaf Skarsgård first became involved in the project a couple of years ago. He wanted to play the lead role, but the intended director turned him down. Then that director disappeared and Skarsgård felt that now he wanted to take over the directing job himself.
The film is about a director who comes to Bergman's home on Fårö and discovers that there is something there that does not want anything good to happen.
"It's horror, it's humor, it's a film about Ingmar Bergman and it's a meta-film, a film about a film shoot. I hope the audience will feel moved, entertained and scared," says Skarsgård.
Ingmar Bergman will be played by Claes Ljungmark and the director who comes to Fårö by Ardalan Esmaili. Skarsgård says:
I want this Bergman to be a wonderful monster. I'm incredibly excited to see what Claes does. He has no fear.
Filming will start later this year and they have had the opportunity to film in Bergman's house on Fårö. Skarsgård says:
The tough part now is all the preparations. I want to get started as soon as possible.
Corrected: In an earlier version, the full film title had not been included.
