Jannik Sinner is known for having a competitive spirit on the court and being humble outside of it. After beating Carlos Alcaraz with 3–1 in sets (4–6, 6–4, 6–4, 6–4) in the final, he showed the greatest possible respect for his opponent.
”You make me better every day”
Thanks for the player you are. It's always so hard to play against you, but we have a fantastic relationship on and off the court. You will hold this trophy many times, and you already have two, said the 23-year-old to the audience's great applause.
Alcaraz had also, before Sinner spoke, praised his opponent from the center court:
I'm really happy for your sake and happy to be able to build a really good relationship and rivalry on the court. You make me better every day.
Sinner got his revenge
The last time the duo faced off was in the already historic final of the French Championship earlier in the summer. A match that lasted for five and a half hours.
That time, Alcaraz was the strongest. Now Sinner got his revenge.
I had a very tough loss in Paris, but it doesn't matter how you win or lose, what matters is that you understand what you did wrong, and that's exactly what we did, said Sinner and concluded, about winning Wimbledon for the first time:
My team and I said before the match that we never thought I'd be here when I was little. I'm living my dream.
With the win, Sinner cashed in his fourth Grand Slam title, while Alcaraz's winning streak in the classic tournament stopped at two years.
With his four Grand Slam titles, the Italian is now only one title away from his Spanish rival's record of five.
