The musician was best known for hits including "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do," "Bad Blood," and "Love Will Keep Us Together."
Entertainment website TMZ reported earlier in the day that the Grammy-nominated musician had been rushed to a Los Angeles hospital, and a family source told the newspaper that Sedaka had been feeling unwell that morning.
Neil Sedaka was born in 1939 in Brooklyn, New York, and was one of the world's first teen pop stars in the 1950s.
