Biathlon star Julia Simon, who was convicted of credit card fraud, will be exempted from punishment by the biathlon disciplinary unit BIU, allowing her to compete again in Hochfilzen on December 12.

The French Ski Federation has suspended her for six months, five of which are suspended, for being convicted of, among other things, stealing and using the credit card of national team colleague Justine Braisaz-Bouchet.

The French court sentenced Simon to a three-month suspended sentence and a fine.

The BIU, which is biathlon's independent disciplinary unit, has also looked into the case. In its statement, it writes:

"The BIU is satisfied with how the case has been handled within the legal framework by the FFS (French Ski Federation) and that the penalty falls within the range available under national rules. The BIU will therefore not open a separate investigation."

However, the disciplinary unit writes that it will "continue to monitor any wider problems within the French national team and is prepared to act if new information emerges."

A new case has begun to be investigated within the French biathlon team, where Jeanne Richard is accused of attempting to tamper with Océane Michelon's rifle. The FFS has confirmed a "violation of the rules within the group" that led to the suspension, but has not been able to establish any attempt at sabotage.

Julia Simon will miss the opening competition in the World Cup, in Östersund starting tomorrow, but can compete again in Hochfilzen on December 12.

Simon won four World Championship gold medals last season and is seen as one of the big Olympic favorites in February.
