Sida Faces Internal Dispute Over Resuming Aid to Unrwa

Sida's humanitarian department wants to resume aid to the aid organization Unrwa, but is refused by its own leadership, according to documents that Dagens Nyheter has taken part of. We work entirely in the government's line, says Sida's director general Jakob Granit to the newspaper.

The officials at Sida's humanitarian department want to provide 30 million kronor in emergency aid to Gaza through the UN's organization for Palestinian refugees, Unrwa. This is shown in documents that Dagens Nyheter has taken part of. The documents reveal that the department assesses that the aid organization is effective.

Sida's management, on the other hand, follows the government's line and writes in a report from last week that "Sida's overall assessment is that it should not support Unrwa's activities with additional funding for the time being."

Our overall assessment is that it is in line with the overall foreign and aid policy, says Sida's Director-General Jakob Granit to DN.

In December, the Swedish government terminated the so-called core support to Unrwa. Support is given to other humanitarian actors in Gaza. Sweden and the USA are the only previous aid donors that have completely discontinued support to Unrwa.
