In addition to one fatality, five people were injured in the shooting at a rave in the city of Aarau. It was around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday morning and the party was about to end when shots were fired.
Police Chief Michael Leupold said, according to the newspaper Blick on Sunday evening, that ammunition from two weapons was found - a pistol or K-pistol and a more powerful rifle. Shots were fired in two places, on the track itself and at a campsite.
Three hypotheses
Leupold states that the police have three working hypotheses:
The first is a terrorist attack, the second a mass murder, and the third an ordinary criminal act, the motive for which is still unknown.
Despite an extensive police operation with large roadblocks and reinforcements from other parts of Switzerland, as well as from across the border in Germany, investigators lack clear leads on the perpetrators.
"At the moment we have no reliable information about the perpetrators. We do not know if it is one person or several, nor whether they fled in a vehicle or on foot," police spokesman Bernhard Graser said, according to the AFP news agency.
Multiple shots
In a video published by Blick, several shots are heard in quick succession. A festival-goer tells the newspaper that the music suddenly stopped and then several shots were heard. The man initially thought it was fireworks, but took cover behind a refrigerator when he realized it was gunfire.
Then he saw a woman get hit by a bullet, which ricocheted off the roof.
"I ran back to the woman. She had been hit. We tried to revive her, but she bled to death before our eyes," the man says.
