Sumy has been subjected to intense bombings since the Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a buffer zone in the region, which is located near the border to Russia.
In Tuesday morning's attack, three people were killed and at least 20 injured, according to information from local authorities.
"Brutal attack”
"The Russians launched a brutal attack on Sumy - they directed rocket artillery directly at the city and its ordinary streets. It was a completely intentional attack on civilians," says President Zelenskyj in a post on X.
He also publishes a video from the rescue service from the site and comments that the attacks "say everything you need to know about Russia's so-called 'desire' to end this war"."
Russia claims on Tuesday that the country has taken control of another community located about a half-mile from the border in the Sumy region.
Several injured
In the city of Chernihiv, which is located further west, four people, two men and two women, were injured in a drone attack, reports the city's military leadership. All the injured have been taken to hospital, the two men are reported to have severe injuries, according to the authorities.
A high-rise building was damaged in the attack, as well as several smaller residential buildings and an industrial facility.
Explosions have also been heard in, among other places, Odessa in the south, reports the Ukrainian public service company Suspilne.
