On Friday, the US president announced an agreement with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to release hundreds of thousands of tons of diesel into US and international markets. The announcement has drawn strong criticism from, among others, Ukraine, EU countries and now some members of the US Congress.
The senators - three Democrats and four Republicans - said in a joint statement that the diesel deal violates US law.
“Congress enacted an explicit ban on Russian energy imports in 2022,” the senators wrote in a statement, adding that the deal “provides Putin with a financial lifeline.”
