A full 37 of 40 inspected schools are criticised by the Swedish Schools Inspectorate for failing to meet the legal requirements for staffed school libraries, according to a review by Magasin K.
The review also shows that 22 schools are considered to have more serious shortcomings, for example that the school completely lacks a school library or that the library is not sufficiently staffed.
Examples of other shortcomings include the school library being locked with no opening hours or staff, or a “library” consisting of three bookshelves in a corridor. At one school, the library is staffed one morning every other week.
