The assassination was carried out by four men in al-Zintan in northwestern Libya, his lawyer, Marcel Ceccaldi, told AFP. It is not known who is behind the murder. The family has confirmed the death.
Seif al-Islam, 53, was long seen as his father's successor. He was wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes after the bloody attempt to crush the 2011 uprising. He was arrested in November of that year, the month after his father, Muammar Gaddafi, was killed.
In 2015, Seif al-Islam was sentenced to death, but was later granted amnesty. Six years later, he announced that he would run in the presidential election, but the election was postponed indefinitely.
