Last year, the Prosecutor's Office made a total of 960 decisions on secret coercive measures – compared to 878 decisions in 2023 and 723 decisions in 2022.

In recent years, several legislative changes have come into force, giving law enforcement agencies extended opportunities to use secret coercive measures to investigate crimes – and to prevent serious crime.

A fresh report shows rising figures for all secret coercive measures in 2024. It includes, among other things, the number of suspected individuals who were subjected to, for example, secret surveillance of electronic communication, secret camera surveillance, and secret data retrieval.

According to Helena Ljunggren, senior prosecutor at the Development Centre, which compiled the report, these are necessary tools in law enforcement activities.

"At the same time, the statistics on the different types of coercive measures and the few rejections from the courts show that secret coercive measures are used with discernment and care," says Helena Ljunggren in a comment.
