Several voices within the Sweden Democrats want the law on incitement against ethnic groups to be scrapped. The party board is proposing that the law be limited, reports Swedish Radio's Ekot.

According to the radio, several motions have been submitted ahead of the party's national assembly. These include the statement that freedom of expression should be in focus and that the law as it is currently formulated is difficult to interpret.

The party board's response is to propose that the party work to have the law reviewed and restricted. Among other things, it believes that incitement against people because of their sexual orientation should not fall under the law.

"Most people can probably understand that it is not an ethnic group and that is what the legislation in its name suggests it should be, a protection against ethnic groups. Then it has been broadened and added with different things," says party secretary Mattias Bäckström.

According to Ekot, the party board also does not want the law to cover incitement based on religious affiliation.
