Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M) has called all parties to a meeting tomorrow to discuss measures against organized crime. Ahead of that meeting, the SD is presenting its "bid" for tougher action against gang criminals.
We want to imprison and deport everyone, with citizenship in another country, who is active in organized crime in Sweden, says Henrik Vinge, chairman of the Justice Committee (SD).
According to the police's latest survey, this involves just over 3,000 people.
Deporting them will become possible when it is forbidden to participate in gangs, a legislation that the government is already working on and which is aimed at coming into force on January 1, 2027. The SD's proposal is about how they want the law to be designed. A proposal from the government's investigators is expected in February.
Want a lifetime
Another starting point from the SD is that the penalty for the crime of participation should include life imprisonment. This would then also apply to Swedish gang criminals who cannot be deported.
This means that all of the active gang criminals will either be locked up, or locked up and deported, without them having to commit any new crimes, says Vinge.
However, the SD does not say anything about what is required to be convicted of the crime of participation. But it should not be enough to be on the police's list of active gang criminals.
The police have an idea of who these people are and have information on how they are involved in criminal activity.
But it will be a normal legal process with prosecutors as it always works, says Vinge.
“Seems to have forgotten”
Gunnar Strömmer comments on the SD's proposal:
"Of course, gang criminals with dual citizenship should be able to get rid of their Swedish citizenship, and those who participate in criminal networks should receive significant punishments. All of this is now possible thanks to our work during this mandate period," he says.
The Social Democrats are more questioning the move:
"The Sweden Democrats seem to have forgotten that we are already in the process of criminalizing gang participation and revoking citizenship. Of course, gang criminals should be in prison and non-citizens should be deported," says Teresa Carvalho, legal policy spokesperson.
