Scania CEO: We Shouldn't Own Northvolt Factory

The truck manufacturer Scania does not see itself as the actor that should rescue the bankrupt Northvolt factory in Skellefteå or the development operations in Västerås from closure. Our role is primarily to be a customer, says Scania's CEO Christian Levin.

We are working further and hope that someone wants to step forward and take over the ownership of both the fine factory in Skellefteå and the laboratory and development departments in Västerås, says Christian Levin to TT in connection with the presentation of Scania's report for the first quarter of the year.

We continue to participate in discussions with several parties interested in stepping in. But our role should not be as owners going forward, he adds.

The statement comes after Scania has entered into a billion-loan agreement to support the crisis-stricken battery manufacturer and subsequently also bought out a unit called Northvolt Systems.

Northvolt System is a small but very good complement to our separate motor business. We see that together with our electric motors and electric gearboxes, we can also deliver a tailored battery package to industrial customers who want it, says Levin.

He adds that he is simultaneously proud that Scania has contributed to keeping production going at Northvolt "under incredibly difficult conditions":

Together with the fantastic employees at Northvolt, he says.
