In the 2021 election, the Jakt- och fiskesamerna became the largest party, with over 37 percent of the votes. According to a Novus survey from April, the party appears to become the largest again this time – according to which more than four out of 10 will vote for the Jakt- och fiskesamerna.

One of the major issues in this year's election concerns the conflict over who may belong to a sameby, where the Jakt- och fiskesamerna and the largest opposition party, the Sameland Party, think completely differently.

If the Jakt- och fiskesamerna succeed in forming a majority again, Chairman Håkan Jonsson wants to push through a legislative change regarding who may belong to a sameby. Jonsson has described the issue to TT as "cutting right through" the Sametinget.

The Sametinget is both an elected organ with the task of working on issues related to Sami culture and a government agency with administrative tasks. The elected assembly, called the plenum, consists of 31 members. Elections have been held every fourth year since 1993.

The agency also works on issues related to Sami land use, community planning, reindeer husbandry, wildlife management, environment, climate, and biological diversity.

The polling stations are open from 8 am to 8 pm, and you can vote at any polling station. If you cannot get to a polling station, you can still vote by mail. The County Administrative Board of Norrbotten will begin counting the votes a week after the election day, and the result is expected to be clear at the latest by May 28.
