Prosecutor Rasmus Öman has a clear picture of what happened late in the evening of January 29, 2025 in Södertälje.
Quran burner and critic of Islam Salwan Momika was live-streaming on TikTok. He went out onto the balcony to smoke - and then shots were heard.
The investigation has shown that the suspected perpetrator had entered one of the neighboring gates, then went up onto the roof, then down onto the balcony and into the apartment where Momika was.
After the murder, the suspected shooter fled to Syria, and according to Öman, he may still be there.
"We have a person who we believe is the shooter. As I have said before, he went to Syria immediately after the incident, but I don't know exactly where he is today," Öman tells TT.
There is an international wanted list and he is being held in absentia.
Syrian citizenship
The suspect has Syrian citizenship - and that may mean he will never be extradited to Sweden. Generally speaking, countries do not extradite their own citizens, which could mean the man goes free.
"It would be desirable to have him extradited, but I don't really know what the possibilities are. His Syrian citizenship could make that impossible, if it is the case that he is there," says Öman.
"No one else detained"
The fact that the suspect is internationally wanted could lead to an arrest, but that is not certain.
If he were to be checked in connection with entry to or exit from other countries, staff would receive information that he is wanted and is being held in absentia in Sweden. However, it is not possible to say in general terms how they will act on this.
So there is a risk that he will not be extradited, at least for a while to come.
Rasmus Öman says that possible accomplices to the murder have been investigated.
"Currently, no one is in custody on any such suspicions," he says.
Salwan Momika became internationally known for his Quran burnings, which sparked outrage in large parts of the Muslim world, and he consequently faced a very high level of threat.
