After the outbreak, four deaths were initially investigated. Three of these have now been shown to have other causes, after sampling of food and infection tracking. The deceased who was infected with salmonella lived in one of the affected nursing homes.
One of the people who died over the weekend was infected with salmonella. Whether it was the cause of death, we do not know and it is not certain that we will find out, says Sari Eriksson, municipal director in Katrineholm, to SVT.
We also know that the three other people who died over the weekend were not infected with salmonella, they died of other causes.
The Public Health Agency is following the development in Katrineholm at the same time. The agency is also monitoring an outbreak related to Swedish-produced eggs, but so far, it has not been possible to establish that there are links to the cases of illness in Katrineholm.
There are 17 cases that have been detected. There has been an increase in salmonella in recent weeks and we are looking closer at this outbreak, says Rikard Dryselius, investigator at the Public Health Agency to TT.
According to Dryselius, this variant of salmonella has been detected before in Swedish egg production.
A few years ago, there was a major outbreak and it is now the same strain that has returned. Traditionally, we have a very low incidence of salmonella in Swedish egg production, so it is unfortunate if strains that exist remain. We do not want that.
