Germany is planning to upgrade its Eurofighter fleet and Swedish Saab is close to securing a multi-billion kronor order for equipment for the planes.

Germany plans to award Saab and the American Northrop Grumman a contract worth 1.2 billion euro (13.3 billion kronor) to upgrade its Eurofighter fleet with equipment needed to use advanced missiles to detect and destroy ground-based air defense systems.

According to people with insight, the contract can also pave the way for cooperation between Germany and Sweden on the development of next-generation fighter aircraft, which is needed to replace the Eurofighter fleet in the 2040s, reports Bloomberg.

The agreement on the upgrade of the Eurofighter will also be discussed when Sweden's Minister of Defense Pål Jonson (The Moderate Party) meets his German counterpart Boris Pistorius in Berlin on Tuesday.
